Amakhala Game Reserve
Eastern Cape , South Africa
The Amakhala Game Reserve is a 7000 hectare reserve with several lodges on the property located in the heart of the Eastern Cape between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth. It is well stocked with general game and is an excellent location to see cheetah up close. All the big five occur here but leopard are seldom seen. Lions are kept in a 500 hectare section of the property which is accessed via a tunnel under a highway which runs adjacent to the property.
The Amakhala Game Reserve supports a number of different habitat types and ecosystems from coastal dune veld to open grass lands and savannah woodland. The reserve also hosts a small population of the rare Black Rhino and sightings of these special creatures are not uncommon.

There is another fenced off section of the reserve populated with only non-dangerous game where guests can embark on a guided bush walk if they wish. A highlight of any stay is the stunning vantage point on the reserve which overlooks game rich plains and the meandering Bushmans River below.
There are several private camps on Amakhala which include:
In addition the quaint and rustic Quatermains Camp, although situated on a separate piece of land, traverses the Amakhala property on game drives.
